A Virus Called Discrimination

We all live on this odd planet

called Earth.

We all breathe

we all eat

we all drink

we all sleep

we all love.

Yet somehow,

our eyes deceive us.

With hijacked brains,

our mouths spew the virus.

The virus’ name?

Discrimination.

Its effects are worldwide, even

infecting those overseas.

Being an airborne virus,

we were doomed the second it

manifested.

The cure is simple, really.

It lies in schools,

libraries,

diverse communities.

Even your phones.

You’d have to be lazy to

not seek it out.

The ingenious vaccine is called education.

Proven to be 100% effective,

it attacks what the virus thrives upon:

misunderstanding.

But if I’m being honest,

I don’t quite understand why

this virus is still a pandemic.

Perhaps because I’m mostly cured,

I can see the solution clearly.

It must be that the virus

sullies its hosts’ senses.

poor things.

I cannot force the vaccine upon the infected,

much like I could not force a flu or

measles or chicken pox vaccine

upon them.

Yet I worry.

How will we ever build

herd immunity if

the majority of the population

hasn’t received the cure?

How many more people must fall ill,

how many more people must suffer its effects directly

and indirectly until

the fear of  no vaccination hulks

the fear of vaccination?

And can our odd little planet

survive long enough

to tell the tale?
